Harvey

Having grown up less than ten miles away from Corpus Christi, and having gone through Hurricane Celia (130 MPH winds with gusts clocked at 180+) in 1970, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the people on the Texas coast who haven't evacuated are making a terrible mistake.

The wind in a hurricane is very dangerous (we stayed during Celia, and it was incredible), but the rain can be much, much more dangerous, and this storm is predicted to move so slowly that it's essentially sheltering in place, so to speak, for the next 4-5 days. There are forecasts with some models of over 40 inches of rain in some places by next Friday.

That will cause catastrophic flooding, and people are going to die because they didn't leave.

It feels very, very strange to be watching all this unfold from so far away.
